Why Injuries are your Teachers

Updated: Sep 1

Dear Yoga Student

I know you hate getting injured. There is nothing worse than having mobility issues and missing yoga or any exercise you have scheduled. If you are like me, a sore knee or a hurt finger can really get you down and ruin your week.

My Recent Experience with Injury

Two weeks ago, I got into pigeon pose at the end of my yoga practice. My hip was really unhappy with me. I went WAY too deep, WAY too fast. This injury occurred in class after coming back from vacation. I forced my body into a position I was used to and wasn't really listening to myself. I was not in the present moment; I was on autopilot.

Thankfully, the injury was not terrible. At first, I was upset with myself. However, after a few days, I connected with the muscle and the area I injured. For example, when I walked and felt that muscle strain, I thought, "Wow, I didn't know this muscle supports me in this way when I walk." As I swam in the pool, weightless, I realized how this muscle helps during certain leg kicks. It was incredible to learn how this particular muscle and part of my body work. By day three, when the pain was less intense, I was in awe of all the ways this muscle normally helps me.

The Lessons Our Injuries Teach Us

What if all our injuries could be teachers? They remind us of our bodies and how they are alive. All the parts work together. Healing is a beautiful part of it, something to appreciate, be in awe of, and let in.

Embracing the Healing Process

Injuries can be frustrating, but they also offer valuable lessons. They teach us to listen to our bodies. When we push too hard, we risk injury. Instead of seeing these moments as setbacks, we can view them as opportunities for growth.

Mindfulness in Movement

Practicing mindfulness during yoga is essential. It helps us stay connected to our bodies. When we are present, we can avoid injuries. Mindfulness allows us to understand our limits. It encourages us to move with intention.

Celebrating Our Bodies

Every injury is a reminder of how resilient our bodies are. They heal, adapt, and grow stronger. Instead of focusing on the pain, we can celebrate our bodies' ability to recover. Each experience teaches us more about ourselves.

Conclusion

Injuries may feel like setbacks, but they can also be powerful teachers. They remind us to listen to our bodies, practice mindfulness, and embrace self-care. By appreciating the healing process, we can learn to celebrate our bodies and all they do for us.
