Many of you know that I love nature, especially trees! When I was 18, I heard about a young woman named Julia Butterfly Hill. She climbed a 1,000-year-old redwood tree and lived there for 738 days to save it from being cut down. I wrote Julia a letter to admire her bravery, and she wrote me back! In her letter, she shared stories about her life. She mentioned that her feet had become almost like another pair of hands, able to grab things with her toes. I will never forget that letter or the photo of her perched in her tree.
Most of us move through the world without giving our feet much thought. We often don’t look down unless there’s a problem. Our feet are down there, doing their job, carrying us from place to place. Yet, we rarely take the time to appreciate them. Our feet are masterpieces of engineering! They shape every pose on the mat and influence how we move through our day.

Why Feet Are So Incredible
Your feet are miracles and the foundation of every standing yoga pose. Each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and thousands of sensory receptors sending constant messages to your brain.
This means your feet are not just “supports.” They are intelligent structures designed to adapt, stabilize, and communicate.
1. They Hold Up Your Entire Architecture
Your feet are the foundation of your posture. When they’re strong and awake, everything above them—knees, hips, spine, breath—organizes with more ease.
2. They Absorb Shock and Protect Your Joints
Every step sends force upward. Your feet soften, distribute, and redirect that force, so your knees and hips don’t have to bear the brunt.
3. They Propel You Forward
Walking, running, dancing, flowing—your feet are the engines behind it all. They give you the power to move.
4. They Balance You Through Micro-Adjustments
Even when you think you’re “still,” your feet are making hundreds of tiny shifts to keep you upright. It’s like they’re doing a little dance!
5. They Are Sensory Geniuses
Your feet constantly tell your brain where you are in space. This is why grounding through the feet can instantly calm the nervous system.
6. They Are Emotional Anchors
When life feels scattered, dropping your awareness into your feet is one of the fastest ways to return to your body.
Feet are not passive. Feet are dynamic.
The Connection Between Feet and Mindfulness
Awake feet create awake legs.
Awake legs create an awake core.
An awake core creates an awake breath.
And an awake breath creates an awake mind.
So many yoga traditions begin with the feet because that’s where embodiment starts.
Yoga Poses That Nourish and Strengthen the Feet
Here are two accessible poses that can help you wake up, stretch, strengthen, and appreciate your feet.
Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
Stand with your feet hip-width apart and spread your toes to wake up the soles of your feet. Root down through all four corners of each foot—big-toe mound, pinky-toe mound, inner heel, outer heel—and feel your legs, spine, and crown of your head rise upward from that foundation. Let your arms rest by your sides, soften your jaw, and breathe into the steadiness your feet create. You can rock your weight side to side or forward and backward to test your foundation.

Tree Pose (Vrksasana)
Shift your weight into one foot and feel it anchor into the ground. Bring the opposite foot to your ankle, calf, or inner thigh (avoiding the knee), and press foot and leg gently into one another. Lengthen tall through your spine as your standing foot makes tiny adjustments to keep you balanced. Your hands can rest at your heart or reach overhead like branches growing from a strong, rooted trunk.
Standing in the Grass Pose
I know that in our society, we mostly protect our feet with shoes. But just getting your feet to ground down into the earth is a wonderful way to build awareness. If you can stand or sit with your feet planted in the grass, I highly recommend doing it a few times a week. Now that the weather is nice, kick off your shoes and put your feet on the ground. Close your eyes and notice what you feel.
The Beauty of Connection
When you connect with your feet, you reconnect with yourself. It’s like a gentle reminder that you’re here, in this moment. The earth beneath you, the sky above, and everything in between.
Embracing Your Journey
As you explore these poses and practices, remember that your feet are more than just a means to get around. They are your foundation, your connection to the earth, and a source of strength. So, let’s celebrate our feet! They deserve our love and attention.
Final Thoughts
So, next time you step onto your mat or walk outside, take a moment to appreciate your feet. They’re doing so much for you, often without you even noticing. Let’s honor them, nurture them, and allow them to guide us on our journey through life.
